In short: Emmanuel Fernandez's rise from English lower leagues to the Scottish Premiership is marked by a deeply personal tribute. Beyond the goals and international debuts, his choice of kit number carries a heavy weight, serving as a permanent memory of a brother lost far too soon.

Born in London on 17 July 2001, Emmanuel Oluwasegun Opeyemi Fernandez has navigated a complex professional path through the English football pyramid. His early career saw him move through clubs like Brentford and Gillingham, including loan spells at Sheppey United, Margate, and Spalding United. By July 2021, he had secured a two-year deal with Peterborough United, eventually making his debut in April 2022 during a difficult 4–0 loss to Middlesbrough. Following his release from Gillingham, he played for Ramsgate. He also spent time on loan at Margate.

In a significant career move, Fernandez joined the Scottish Premiership club Rangers in July 2025 for an undisclosed fee. He quickly made an impact, scoring his first league goal for the club on 22 November 2025 during a 2–1 victory against Livingston. However, his journey has not been without hardship; in February 2026, he was subjected to racist abuse online following a match. His move to the Scottish side occurred in July 2025.

His journey with Nigeria began in March 2026 following his initial selection for the squad. After debuting during a 2–1 triumph against Iran on 27 March, he netted his inaugural goal for the side in a 2–2 friendly draw with Jordan four days later. Throughout his career, Fernandez has worn the number 37, a choice made to honor his brother, who passed away at the age of 37. As the youngest of eight children, this tribute remains a central part of his identity on the pitch. He received his first international call-up in March 2026. His debut for Nigeria came as a substitute in a win against Iran.
