In short: Orlando Gill is a cult hero whose journey from a midfielder to a world-class goalkeeper is defined by resilience. After selling his own equipment to cover family medical costs, he rose to save penalties against Germany and secure a lucrative move to French football.

Born in San Lorenzo, Paraguay, on 11 June 2000, Orlando Gill’s path to professional football was far from linear. Originally a midfielder and forward for local club Sportivo Tayazuapé, he transitioned to goalkeeper at age thirteen after being encouraged by his coach. Despite his tall physique and large frame leading others to suggest basketball, Gill remained committed to football, eventually being scouted by CS San Lorenzo.

His professional ascent was marked by significant personal hardship. In 2022, following a troubling pregnancy that required emergency surgery for his wife, Melissa Avalos, Gill was forced to sell his Paraguay U-20 jersey and other football equipment to cover medical expenses. This period of struggle preceded his breakout years in Argentina with San Lorenzo de Almagro, where he became a standout performer in the 2025 AFA Liga Profesional de Fútbol, setting club records for consecutive clean sheets.

Gill's international reputation was cemented during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite an early 4–1 loss to the US, he helped Paraguay reach the round of 32. In a high-stakes penalty shootout against Germany, he was named man of the match after saving crucial penalties from Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade. This performance, alongside a dominant display against France, facilitated his August 2026 move to the French club Lille OSC on a five-year contract.

Today, the left-footed goalkeeper is celebrated as a 'Beloved Son' of San Lorenzo, a title approved by the Municipal Council following his World Cup heroics. He has become known for his shot-stopping ability and his unique skill set, which includes taking free-kicks, inspired by the legendary José Luis Chilavert.
