The heavy weight of a footballing dynasty
In short: Born to one of the greatest players in history, Enzo Zidane’s career was a journey through the elite academies of Europe. From Real Madrid to the Swiss Super League, his path was defined by a famous name and a nomadic search for professional stability.
Enzo Alan Zidane, born on 24 March 1995, entered the world as the eldest son of football legend Zinedine Zidane and Véronique Fernández. Named after his father's idol, the Uruguayan star Enzo Francescoli, his early life was inextricably linked to the sport. A product of the Real Madrid youth academy from 2004, he even trained with the club's first team in 2011 under the invitation of José Mourinho.
His professional trajectory was marked by significant milestones and frequent transitions across several European leagues. He made a memorable senior debut for Real Madrid in November 2016, scoring in a 6–1 Copa del Rey victory against Cultural Leonesa. However, his career later became a series of moves, including stints at Alavés in Spain, Lausanne-Sport in Switzerland—where he was the first signing following the club's takeover by Ineos—and clubs in Portugal such as Aves.
Beyond the pitch, Zidane's identity was shaped by a complex international heritage. While he attained Spanish citizenship in 2006 and represented Spain at the under-15 level in 2009, he later switched to the French Football Federation, playing for the France under-19s in 2014. He was also eligible to represent Algeria through his paternal grandparents.
In September 2024, at the age of 29, Zidane announced his retirement from professional football. He stated his intention to shift his focus toward his family and personal investments. He leaves behind a legacy of a player who navigated the immense pressure of a sporting dynasty, eventually finding peace away from the professional spotlight.
