How a 1999 garage band became a UK chart-topping force
In short: Before they were headlining major festivals, they were a trio called Hybryd playing local clubs. From streaming tracks via Myspace to achieving their first number-one album, the journey of Enter Shikari is a masterclass in genre-blending and DIY persistence.
The roots of Enter Shikari trace back to 1999 in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Originally performing as Hybryd, the group consisted of Rou Reynolds, Chris Batten, and Rob Rolfe. It wasn't until 2003, with the addition of guitarist Rory Clewlow, that the band adopted their current name—a nod to a boat owned by Reynolds' uncle. The name itself carries a deeper meaning, as 'Shikari' is the Hindi word for hunter.
Their ascent was fueled by a unique fusion of rock and electronic music, supported by a heavy presence on digital platforms. In the mid-2000s, the band gained traction through demo EPs and Myspace streams, even catching the attention of Kerrang! Radio. By 2006, they were making waves at the Download Festival and became only the second unsigned act to sell out the London Astoria, following in the footsteps of The Darkness.
The band's discography reflects a steady climb in commercial success. Their 2007 debut, Take to the Skies, reached number 4 in the UK, while subsequent albums like A Flash Flood of Colour also hit the top 4. However, the ultimate milestone arrived with their seventh studio album, A Kiss for the Whole World, which secured their first-ever number-one position on the UK charts in 2023. Operating largely through their own label, Ambush Reality, the band continues to evolve, most recently with the surprise release of Lose Your Self in 2026.
