In short: When William IV died in 1837, the personal union between Britain and Hanover collapsed. Because Hanoverian law prohibited female succession, the British throne passed to Victoria, while the Hanoverian crown went to her uncle, Ernest Augustus. He became the first resident ruler of Hanover since 1714, fundamentally altering European politics.

Born in 1771 as the fifth son of King George III, Ernest Augustus spent his formative years in Germany, attending the University of Göttingen. His early life was defined by military service against Revolutionary France, where he earned a reputation as a capable cavalryman. However, his military career was marked by severe physical trauma; he suffered a disfiguring facial wound near Tournai in 1793 and lost sight in one eye following an injury at the Battle of Tourcoing in 1794.

Upon returning to British political life, Ernest Augustus became a polarizing figure. As a member of the House of Lords, he was a staunch reactionary, opposing Catholic Emancipation and leading the Orange Order in Ireland until 1836. His reputation was further tarnished by persistent, albeit unproven, scandals that forced him into a decade of voluntary exile on the Continent starting in 1818. Despite these controversies, the death of his brother William IV in 1837 triggered his accession to the Hanoverian throne.

His reign in Hanover was characterized by a firm, often authoritarian, hand. Upon taking power, he immediately voided the liberal constitution granted by his predecessor, sparking significant unrest. Though he successfully suppressed the revolution of 1848, he was eventually forced to concede a new charter. By the time of his death in 1851, he had steered Hanover into the German Customs Union, setting the stage for his son, George V, to navigate the kingdom's final, turbulent years before its annexation by Prussia in 1866.
