The blind king who defied Prussia and lost a kingdom to history
In short: George V of Hanover was the last monarch of his line, reigning until 1866. Despite being totally blind and facing a hostile Prussian state, he maintained an autocratic view of royal authority. His refusal to yield to Prussian demands ultimately triggered the annexation of his kingdom following a decisive military defeat.
Born in Berlin in 1819, George V was the only son of Ernest Augustus. His path to the throne was marked by physical adversity; he lost sight in one eye due to a childhood illness in 1828 and the other in an accident in 1833. Despite these challenges, his father insisted he was qualified to rule. When his father ascended the Hanoverian throne in 1837, the personal union between the British and Hanoverian crowns ended because Hanoverian law prohibited female succession, preventing Queen Victoria from inheriting both.
George V succeeded his father in 1851, inheriting a kingdom that sat precariously between rising Prussian influence and the Austrian Empire. Influenced by his father and his uncle, Duke Charles of Mecklenburg, George held a rigid, autocratic belief in his royal prerogatives. This led to frequent, bitter conflicts with the Hanoverian Landtag, or parliament. His deep-seated aversion to Prussia manifested in his refusal to allow Prussian railway expansion across his territory and his consistent support for Austria within the German Confederation.
The tension reached a breaking point in 1866 during the Austro-Prussian War. When Prussia demanded that Hanover either align with them or face invasion, George V defied his own parliament and rejected the ultimatum. Although the Hanoverian army achieved a tactical success at the Battle of Langensalza, they were hopelessly outnumbered and surrendered on June 29, 1866. George refused to abdicate in favor of his son, hoping to preserve the kingdom's sovereignty, but Prussia annexed Hanover regardless. The former king spent his remaining years in exile, his reign ending as the final chapter of an independent Hanoverian monarchy.
