Was the first African explorer of the American West a victim or a survivor?
In short: Esteban de Dorantes, an enslaved Moroccan, survived a disastrous 1528 expedition to become a legendary medicine man across the American interior. After walking 2,000 miles to Mexico, he led a search for the Seven Cities of Cíbola, only to vanish into history—or perhaps, into a new life.
Born in Azemmour, Morocco, around 1500, Esteban was sold into slavery in 1522 to a Spanish nobleman named Andrés Dorantes de Carranza. He joined the 1528 Narváez expedition to Florida, which quickly devolved into a series of shipwrecks and brutal enslavement by indigenous groups. By 1534, Esteban and three other survivors—including Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca—escaped their captors. Adopting the roles of medicine men, they traversed the American Southwest and Northern Mexico, eventually reaching a Spanish settlement in Sinaloa in July 1536 before continuing to Mexico City.
The group's tales of wealthy northern civilizations prompted the Viceroy of New Spain to commission Fray Marcos de Niza to find the fabled Seven Cities of Cíbola. Esteban served as the expedition's guide, traveling ahead of the main party. In 1539, he reached the Zuni pueblo of Hawikuh, where he was reportedly killed. Contemporary Spanish accounts offer conflicting reasons for his death, ranging from his alleged mistreatment of local women to his perceived arrogance in demanding turquoise and claiming to have armed followers nearby.
The certainty of his death remains a subject of intense historical debate. While Francisco Vázquez de Coronado reported finding items belonging to Esteban in 1540, other theories persist. Some scholars suggest he may have been killed for appearing to impersonate a Zuni medicine man or a malevolent sorcerer. Conversely, modern researchers like Juan Francisco Maura have proposed that Esteban may have orchestrated his own disappearance with the help of local allies, allowing him to finally escape his status as a subaltern and live out his days among the A:shiwi people.
