From Hop King to Klondike prospector, Ezra Meeker lived a life of relentless reinvention.
In short: Ezra Meeker was a pioneer who crossed the Oregon Trail in 1852, only to become the world's wealthiest hop producer. After losing his fortune to an aphid infestation, the aging adventurer spent his final decades obsessively memorializing the trail he once traversed, even flying over it by airplane at age 93.
Born in 1830, Ezra Meeker’s life was defined by the American frontier. In 1852, he and his wife, Eliza Jane, joined the massive migration to the Oregon Territory, enduring a six-month trek that Meeker later credited as the making of his character. After settling in the Puget Sound region, he eventually established himself in Puyallup, where he pioneered the local hop industry. By the 1880s, his success as the 'Hop King of the World' had made him the territory's wealthiest man, allowing him to build a lavish mansion and serve as Puyallup's first mayor.
The 1890s brought a dramatic reversal of fortune. A devastating aphid infestation in 1891, followed by the global Panic of 1893, wiped out his assets and led to the foreclosure of his lands. Undeterred, the 66-year-old Meeker pivoted to the Klondike Gold Rush. Rather than mining, he applied his entrepreneurial spirit to logistics, hauling thousands of pounds of dried vegetables over the Chilkoot Pass to sell to desperate prospectors in Dawson City. His resilience was a hallmark of his character, whether he was farming, trading, or navigating the complexities of territorial politics.
In his later years, Meeker became a self-appointed guardian of history. Fearing the Oregon Trail would be forgotten, he spent his late 70s and beyond retracing the route by wagon, oxcart, and eventually airplane to advocate for monuments. His efforts were not merely nostalgic; they were a deliberate attempt to cement the legacy of the pioneers. When he died in 1928 at age 97, he left behind a complex legacy as both a builder of the modern Pacific Northwest and a tireless chronicler of its rugged, often brutal, origins.
