Why the UK is transforming its Estonian military presence into a mobile anti-armour force
In short: To counter modern threats, the UK is evolving its Estonian deployment from a traditional armoured battlegroup into a highly mobile, drone-equipped anti-armour force. By 2027, this shift will increase troop numbers to 1,200, prioritising rapid dispersal and advanced digital targeting to better reflect the realities of contemporary warfare.
The transition, scheduled for April 2027, marks a strategic pivot in how the UK contributes to NATO’s eastern flank. Extensive wargaming conducted alongside Estonian partners revealed that a traditional armoured construct is less effective than a force designed for high mobility and adaptability. The new Mobile Anti-Armour Force (MAAF) will leverage advanced weaponry, uncrewed systems, and high-tech drones to operate within Estonia’s specific terrain, ensuring greater survivability against modern surveillance and strike capabilities.
This evolution is heavily informed by lessons from the war in Ukraine. The new force design emphasises integrated intelligence, reconnaissance, and networked command-and-control systems. By incorporating the ASGARD battlefield digitisation programme, the force aims to deliver combat effects with significantly higher precision and speed. Furthermore, the UK is pre-positioning equipment and ammunition stocks within Estonia this year, which will allow a reinforcement brigade to respond much faster during a potential crisis.
Beyond the tactical shift, the partnership remains rooted in long-term commitment. While the UK increases its forward presence to 1,200 troops, it also maintains an entire brigade in the United Kingdom at constant readiness. This dual-layered approach—combining a more lethal, agile forward force with rapid reinforcement capabilities—is designed to deter aggression and strengthen collective defence. The roadmap also commits to continuous modernisation, including upgrades to Multiple Launch Rocket Systems and short-range air defence, ensuring the force remains effective against evolving threats.
