Germany’s undefeated run secures their second European title in 32 years
In short: The 2025 EuroBasket saw a dramatic shift in power. While defending champions Spain suffered a shocking group-stage exit, Germany rose to claim the crown. Their undefeated campaign culminated in an 88–83 victory over Turkey, marking their second title since 1993.
The 42nd edition of the EuroBasket championship, held from 27 August to 14 September 2025, was defined by significant upsets and historic milestones. Germany, the reigning world champions, entered the tournament and finished the competition without a single loss. They secured the championship by defeating Turkey 88–83 in the final, their first title in 32 years, following their previous victory in 1993.
The tournament was notable for the performance of several underdog nations. Finland achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Nordic country to reach a semi-final, eventually falling to Germany. Greece secured the bronze medal after a narrow 92–89 victory over Finland. Meanwhile, the defending champions, Spain, suffered their earliest exit in a 36-year period, failing to advance past the group stage—a feat not seen by a defending champion since Germany's exit in 1995.
Hosting duties were distributed across four nations: Cyprus, Finland, Latvia, Poland, and Latvia. While Latvia, Cyprus, and Finland were selected by the FIBA Europe Board in March 2022, Poland was added as the fourth host following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The tournament utilized a unique visual identity designed with the host cities—Limassol, Tampere, Katowice, and Riga—incorporating custom print technology to create three-dimensional effects on the playing surfaces.
Dennis Schröder was recognized as the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP). The competition featured 24 qualified teams, including debutant Cyprus and returning sides like Portugal and Sweden. The tournament's structure was shaped by a complex qualification process that began in November 2021 and saw 40 teams competing for a spot in the final 24.
