The Venezuelan power hitter who achieved an MLB rarity in a losing effort
In short: On April 26, 2025, Eugenio Suárez joined an elite group of just 19 players in Major League Baseball history by hitting four home runs in a single game. Remarkably, he achieved this feat during a game his team ultimately lost, becoming only the third player to do so.
Born in Venezuela on July 18, 1991, Suárez has built a career defined by significant power and occasional defensive struggles. By hitting 49 home runs in 2019, he established new single-season benchmarks for Venezuelan-born hitters and NL third basemen, cementing his status as a highly productive slugger from Venezuela. His ability to drive the ball is evidenced by a 466-foot home run hit for the Arizona Diamondbacks in June 2025, the longest hit by any Diamondbacks player since April 2022.
Suárez's journey through Major League Baseball has seen him suit up for the Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds, Seattle Mariners, and Arizona Diamondbacks. His career has been marked by high-stakes transactions, such as his 2022 trade from the Reds to the Mariners, a move intended to save the Cincinnati club nearly $36 million. He has also demonstrated remarkable durability and resurgence, such as reaching his 300th career home run in June 2025 while playing for Arizona.
Beyond the statistics, Suárez's career includes notable milestones and setbacks. He was awarded the Luis Aparicio Award in 2019, recognizing him as the best Venezuelan player in MLB. However, he has also faced physical challenges, including a 2020 shoulder surgery necessitated by a diving mishap in a swimming pool at his Florida residence. By September 2, 2026, Suárez had become a naturalized citizen of the United States.
