Why Leeds United fans nicknamed a versatile Macedonian footballer their own Duracell Bunny
In short: Ezgjan Alioski is a master of tactical fluidity, transitioning seamlessly from a defensive left-back to a lethal attacking winger. Known for his relentless stamina and pace, the North Macedonian international became a cult hero at Leeds United, where his high-energy play style earned him a unique, battery-powered moniker.
Born on February 12, 1992, Ezgjan Alioski began his professional journey in the Swiss youth system. After a stint with Young Boys, he found his breakthrough at Lugano. Initially signed as a left-back, manager Zdeněk Zeman famously converted him into an attacking threat. The gamble paid off spectacularly during the 2016–17 season, where Alioski netted 16 goals and provided 14 assists in 34 matches, helping Lugano secure a third-place finish and earning himself a spot in the Swiss Super League Team of the Year.
Alioski’s move to Leeds United in July 2017 marked the beginning of a transformative four-year tenure. His adaptability was tested when an injury to teammate Barry Douglas forced him into a wing-back role. He thrived, becoming a key engine in the side’s promotion to the Premier League in 2020. His contributions were not limited to defense; he was a consistent goal-scoring threat, winning the Championship Goal of the Month in August 2017 and the club’s Goal of the Season award for his strike against Nottingham Forest.
Beyond his club success, Alioski has been a cornerstone for North Macedonia. A fluent speaker of eight languages, he represents his birthplace with pride. His international career reached a historic milestone in 2021 when he helped the nation qualify for its first major tournament, UEFA Euro 2020. During the competition, he remained a focal point, scoring against Ukraine. Following his departure from Leeds, he continued his career in Saudi Arabia and Turkey, where he secured the 2023 Turkish Cup with Fenerbahçe, further cementing his reputation as a versatile and enduring professional.
