From neighborhood roots to the top flight of Turkish football
In short: Eyüpspor is a masterclass in community-driven growth. Once a local neighborhood side in Istanbul, the club has navigated decades of regional competition to reach the Süper Lig. Its journey from the amateur leagues to the national elite highlights a modern blueprint for sustainable sports management.
Founded in 1919 in the Eyüpsultan district, Eyüpspor has long been defined by its identity as a 'Golden Horn' neighborhood club. For much of its history, it operated within the regional and amateur tiers of Turkish football. The club’s traditional purple and yellow colors are deeply tied to its local roots, a visual identity it has maintained for over a century while competing in various Istanbul regional leagues during the inter-war period.
The club's trajectory toward the top tier accelerated significantly in 2019 when businessman Murat Özkaya took over as president. His strategy focused on professionalizing operations and clearing legacy debts to create a sustainable financial model. This approach bore fruit in the 2020–21 season, where the team won the TFF 2. Lig with a record points haul. This momentum continued into the 2023–24 campaign, where the club secured its first-ever promotion to the Süper Lig after a decisive victory against Altay.
Despite its recent success, the club faces the logistical challenges of rapid growth. Because its traditional home, Eyüp Stadyumu, did not meet modern broadcast requirements, the team had to play home fixtures at the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Stadium and Pendik Stadium. To solve this, a new 10,000 to 12,000-capacity all-seater stadium is currently being planned to keep the club anchored in its historic neighborhood while meeting UEFA-TFF standards. This balance of heritage and modernization remains central to the club's current mission.
The club's rise has also been marked by high-profile leadership and legal hurdles. Following the arrest of Murat Özkaya on match-fixing allegations in 2025, ownership transitioned to the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund of Turkey (TMSF). Despite these administrative shifts, the club has maintained its competitive edge, finishing 6th in its debut Süper Lig season in 2024–25, proving that its community-rooted model can compete with the nation's biggest giants.
