The deliberate path of a basketball prodigy choosing development over fame
In short: Most elite athletes rush to the biggest stage as soon as possible. Ezi Magbegor did the opposite. Despite heavy interest from US colleges, she chose to stay in Australia to refine her craft—a gamble on long-term mastery that eventually paved the way for WNBA stardom and Olympic glory.
Magbegor's trajectory is a study in patient development. After being selected 12th overall by the Seattle Storm in 2019, she was only 19 years old. Rather than moving to the United States immediately, both she and the Storm opted for her to remain in Australia to continue her growth. This decision allowed her to build a foundation in the WNBL, where she eventually won a championship with the Melbourne Boomers in April 2022.
Her professional ascent was marked by consistent recognition of her defensive prowess and versatility. In the WNBA, she evolved from a limited-role rookie—becoming one of the youngest players to win a championship—to an undisputed starter for the Seattle Storm in 2023. That year, she played all 40 games, averaging 32.6 minutes per game and achieving career highs across all statistical categories, earning her first All-Star selection.
On the international stage, Magbegor has been a cornerstone of Australian basketball since age 16. She notably led the U17 Sapphires to their inaugural World Championship title in Spain, where she was named MVP after snapping a 28-game win streak by team USA. Her journey reached a pinnacle at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she scored 30 points on 71 percent shooting to secure a bronze medal for the Opals.
Beyond the court, Magbegor balances her professional career with academic pursuits. Originally intending to study commerce, she shifted her focus in 2021 to pursue a Bachelor of Psychology at Deakin University, where she was named the university's Female Sportsperson of the Year.
