In short: Before they were a powerhouse of the Russian Premier League, Lokomotiv Moscow was a club built by the rails. From their 1922 origins as a railway team to becoming a record-breaking nine-time Russian Cup winner, the club's journey is a masterclass in navigating the shifts of Soviet and post-Soviet sports.

Founded in 1922 as Kazanka, the club was deeply rooted in the Moscow railway system. By 1924, it consolidated the strongest railway players into the 'Club of the October Revolution' (KOR). In 1936, it took on its current name, Lokomotiv, meaning 'Locomotive.' During the Soviet era, the club was owned by the Ministry of Transportation and functioned as part of the Lokomotiv Voluntary Sports Society. This era saw them become early pioneers, debuting in the first-ever Soviet football club championship in May 1936 and winning their first Soviet Cup that same year by defeating Dynamo Tbilisi 2–0.

The club's history is marked by distinct cycles of success and instability. In the 1950s, Lokomotiv served as a 'football ambassador' for the Soviet Union, touring continents like Africa and North America. However, they faced significant struggles following World War II, suffering two relegations to the Soviet First League in a five-year span before a resurgence in 1951. The post-Soviet era was equally volatile; the club was often labeled the 'weakest link' in Moscow until a turning point in 2002. That year, they won their first league title in a 'golden match' against CSKA Moscow after finishing level on points.

Recent decades have seen a mix of high-profile managerial changes and silverware. While the club struggled with consistency under various coaches, they achieved a historic third Russian Premier League title in the 2016–17 season. Despite this success, the club's international reach was halted in 2022 following the European Club Association's suspension of all Russian teams. Today, Lokomotiv remains a dominant force in domestic knockout competitions, holding a record nine Russian Cup titles.
