In short: In 2003, FC Lugano faced total collapse. Declared bankrupt and stripped of its league status, the club was forced to field only under-21 players while selling off its senior roster to settle debts. Yet, through a strategic merger and rebranding, it managed a remarkable resurrection.

Founded on July 28, 1908, by Ernesto Corsini, FC Lugano established itself as a staple of Swiss football early on. The club enjoyed significant success in the mid-20th century, capturing three national titles between 1938 and 1949. During this golden era, the team outgrew its original home at Campo Marzio, leading to the inauguration of the Cornaredo Stadium in 1951 with a capacity of 15,000.

The turn of the millennium brought a period of severe instability. Following a declaration of bankruptcy in 2003, the club was forcibly removed from the league and renamed AC Lugano. To survive, it merged with Malcantone Agno in 2004 to re-enter the Swiss football system as a lower-tier side. It took years of restructuring under new ownership—including a 2007 acquisition by Giambattista Pastorello's group—before the club could begin its climb back to the top.

The resurrection reached a symbolic peak on June 4, 2008, during the club’s centenary year, when shareholders voted to reinstate the original name: FC Lugano. This identity restoration paved the way for a return to the Swiss Super League in 2015. The modern era saw further transformation in 2021, when American billionaire Joe Mansueto purchased the club, establishing it as a sister club to Chicago Fire FC. This investment quickly bore fruit, culminating in the club's first title in 29 years—the 2021–22 Swiss Cup.

Today, the club is preparing for its next physical evolution. After the conclusion of the 2025–26 season, Lugano will move from Cornaredo to the newly built AIL Arena, marking a new chapter in a century-long journey of survival and rebirth.
