In short: Once relegated to the fourth tier following a devastating bankruptcy, this Swiss football club has defied the odds. After years of instability, they have transformed from a struggling side into a European competitor, proving that even the most turbulent histories can find a path to the top.

Founded in 1896 as Montriond Lausanne, the club underwent a significant transformation in 1920. Following a merger with the physical education club Club Hygiénique de Lausanne, they adopted the name Lausanne-Sports FC. The club's golden era arrived during the late 1950s and 1960s, a period so successful that their players were nicknamed the 'Lords of the Night.' This moniker celebrated the enchanting atmosphere of evening matches, which were a unique feature made possible by the advent of floodlights.

However, the club's stability was severely tested at the turn of the millennium. After the 2001–02 season, Lausanne-Sport was relegated because it failed to secure a first-level license. The situation worsened following the 2002–03 season when bankruptcy forced a complete reformation. Rebranded as FC Lausanne-Sport for the 2003–04 season, the club was forced to restart in the fourth tier of Swiss football. Through consecutive promotions in the 2003–04 and 2004–05 seasons, they began a slow climb back up the divisions.

The modern era has been characterized by a 'yo-yo' pattern of promotions and relegations, but with significant milestones. In 2017, the British petrochemical company Ineos, owned by Jim Ratcliffe, acquired the club. Since then, the club has seen notable successes, including a shock run to the 2010–11 UEFA Europa League group stages while still in the second tier. Most recently, a 5th place finish in the 2024–25 season secured their first-ever qualification for the Conference League, marking a new chapter of international competition.
