In short: In 2026, a newly promoted side achieved what few thought possible: winning the Swiss Super League. From the depths of the second division to the heights of the Champions League, the story of FC Thun is a masterclass in defying the odds and rewriting footballing history.

Founded on 1 May 1898, FC Thun spent much of its history navigating the tiers of Swiss football. For decades, the club oscillated between the top flight and the second division, experiencing periods of significant struggle, including a stint in the third-tier 1. Liga following the 1969–70 season. However, the turn of the millennium brought a period of unprecedented success that captured the attention of the continent.

The club's golden era began in the early 2000s. Under manager Hanspeter Latour, Thun returned to the top flight in the 2001–02 season after a 47-year absence. By the 2004–05 season, they had secured a second-place finish in the Super League, earning a spot in the UEFA Champions League group stages for 2005–06. During this campaign, they famously competed against giants like Arsenal and Ajax, even securing a victory over Sparta Prague.

The most remarkable chapter, however, occurred much later. After years of battling relegation and financial instability—which required interventions from investors like Chien Lee to prevent extinction—the club underwent a meteoric rise. Following a 2024–25 promotion from the Challenge League, Thun achieved the unthinkable: winning the Swiss Super League title on 3 May 2026. This feat was so unexpected that media outlets compared the achievement to the legendary 'Kaiserslautern 2.0' phenomenon.

Today, the club plays at the Stockhorn Arena, a venue that transitioned from a private construction project in 2010 to a symbol of the club's modern identity. While the club has faced the loss of key players and coaching changes, its recent trajectory remains one of the most significant stories in recent European football.
