The Swiss club that pioneered European football and still thrives after 147 years
In short: Founded in 1879, FC St. Gallen holds the distinction of being the oldest football organization in Switzerland and across the European mainland. Known as the Espen, this historic club has survived financial crises and multiple relegations to remain a central pillar of Swiss football culture and regional identity today.
Established on April 19, 1879, at the Restaurant Hörnli, FC St. Gallen emerged from a local newspaper invitation. It quickly solidified its place in history, eventually securing its first Swiss Championship in the 1903–04 season. Over the decades, the club has navigated significant volatility, including a 1932 relegation and a mid-century drop to the third tier in 1957. Despite these setbacks, the club maintained its relevance, winning the Swiss Cup in 1969 and securing a second league title during the 1999–2000 campaign under manager Marcel Koller.
The 21st century brought both modernization and instability. In 2008, the club transitioned from its traditional Espenmoos home to a new stadium, now known as the Sitterstadion. This era was marked by financial strain and fluctuating league performance, including several relegations and immediate promotions. However, the appointment of Matthias Hüppi as president in 2018 provided a necessary structural reset. Under the tactical guidance of Peter Zeidler, the team adopted an aggressive, high-pressing style that revitalized their competitive standing, leading to a runners-up finish in 2020 and consecutive Swiss Cup final appearances.
Recent years have seen a return to European competition and domestic glory. Under coach Enrico Maaßen, the club successfully navigated the 2024–25 qualification rounds for the UEFA Conference League and secured a 2nd-place league finish. The 2025–26 season proved particularly historic, as the team claimed the Swiss Cup with a 3–0 victory, their first major domestic trophy in over two decades. Today, the club draws immense support from the Eastern Switzerland region, with fans maintaining a unique stadium culture—including a sponsor-free name chosen by a fan vote—that cements their status as a cornerstone of the Swiss game.
