In short: From its founding in 1997, FC Sheriff Tiraspol has amassed record domestic titles, but its European journey tells a more complex story. The club has repeatedly achieved milestones previously unseen for Moldovan football, attracting international attention despite its location in the unrecognized breakaway state of Transnistria.

FC Sheriff Tiraspol began its journey in 1996 as FC Tiras Tiraspol, before being renamed FC Sheriff Tiraspol on April 4, 1997, by Viktor Gushan, who owned the key sponsor conglomerate, Sheriff. The club's early success was marked by winning the Moldovan Cup in the 1998–99 season, and they secured their first National Division title in the 2000–01 season. This league triumph kicked off a remarkable run of ten consecutive titles, continuing until 2010, during which time they also claimed league-cup doubles in 2002, 2006, and 2008–10. Furthermore, they accumulated every Moldovan Super Cup from 2004 through 2010.

The club’s international achievements are notable, including winning the Commonwealth of Independent States Cup in both 2003 and 2009, making them the first Moldovan team to secure an international title. Their European progression saw them reach the UEFA Champions League group stages in 2021, becoming the first Moldovan side to do so. During that campaign, they achieved a notable victory against eventual champions Real Madrid on September 28, 2021, at the Santiago Bernabéu. This performance was part of a broader run where they also won their opening group game against Shakhtar Donetsk on September 15, 2021.

The club's identity is intrinsically linked to its main sponsor, Sheriff, a company that manages nearly all profitable private industries within Transnistria. This connection means that both the club and the parent company are viewed as being closely aligned with Transnistrian separatism and pro-Russian sympathies. While the club has faced squad management issues, such as the departure of players like Cristiano da Silva Leite and Danilo Arboleda before the 2021–22 UEFA Europa League knockout rounds, they have consistently demonstrated a capacity for high-level performance on the continental stage.

The club's domestic dominance was challenged in 2014–15, when they finished third despite having the superior goal difference, losing the title to Milsami Orhei due to a better head-to-head record held by Milsami against both Sheriff and Dacia Chișinău.
