The man who walked 24 miles home for a trophy
In short: Sérgio Conceição’s career is defined by extreme highs and lows—from scoring hat-tricks on the world stage to enduring profound personal tragedy. But perhaps his most memorable moment was a literal trek: walking 24 miles home after leading Braga to a domestic cup final.
Born in Coimbra in 1974, Conceição’s life was marked by early hardship. After joining Porto's academy at 16, his father died in a motorbike accident; his mother and younger brother also passed away during his youth. These losses nearly drove him to quit football entirely, but he persevered to become a prolific right winger for Portugal and several top European clubs.
His playing career was notable for its diversity and discipline. He won the Supercoppa Italiana on his debut for Lazio in 1998—where he was so unknown he was mistaken for a Brazilian player—and later became a hero for PAOK in Greece, wearing the legendary No. 7 shirt. Despite a three-year ban in 2006 for assaulting a referee and spitting on an opponent, he successfully pivoted into management in 2012.
As a manager, Conceição became synonymous with FC Porto. He broke the club's record for most games managed, securing 11 honors including three league titles and multiple domestic cups. His tenure was characterized by intense loyalty and high-stakes drama, such as his 'violent discussion' with Braga's president in 2014 that led to his sacking, and his legendary 24-mile walk home from Vila do Conde after a cup semi-final victory.
By the time he left Porto in 2024, he stood as the second most successful manager in Portuguese football history. His journey—from a bricklayer's son to a multi-trophy winner who navigated personal grief and professional controversy—serves as a masterclass in resilience within the high-pressure world of elite sports.
