The Southern stadium that once hosted an NFL franchise and an upset of Alabama
In short: Opened in 1922, FirstBank Stadium was the first stadium in the South built exclusively for college football. Despite being the smallest in the SEC, this Nashville venue has hosted NFL teams, religious crusades, and recently, a historic upset victory over the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide.
The stadium's history is deeply intertwined with the evolution of collegiate athletics. Originally opened as Dudley Field in 1922, it was named for William Dudley, a former Dean of the Vanderbilt University Medical School who was instrumental in forming the NCAA in 1906. The venue's capacity has seen significant shifts over the decades. Following a massive renovation between 1980 and 1981, the capacity reached 41,000. However, recent renovations between 2022 and 2025 reduced the seating capacity to 35,000.
The venue has served diverse purposes beyond Vanderbilt football. In 1954, it hosted its first night game under newly installed lights, which allowed for a Billy Graham Crusade. During the 1998 season, the stadium served as the home for the Tennessee Oilers (now the Titans) after the franchise moved to Nashville. At the time, it was the smallest home venue in the NFL, as the league had previously declared stadiums with fewer than 50,000 seats inadequate for long-term play following the 1970 merger.
In a modern era of high-stakes competition, the stadium gained renewed national attention on October 5, 2024. The Vanderbilt Commodores secured a stunning 40–35 upset victory against the top-ranked University of Alabama Crimson Tide. This marked Vanderbilt's first win against a Top 5 opponent and their first victory over the football powerhouse since 1984, proving the small SEC venue remains a formidable site for major upsets.
