In short: Founded in 1947, FK Žalgiris has navigated political upheaval, financial collapse, and a total rebranding to become Lithuania's most decorated football club. From its origins in the Soviet league system to making history as the first domestic side to reach a major European group stage, the club remains a national institution.

The club began as Dinamo in 1947, moving from Kaunas to Vilnius. For decades, it competed within the Soviet football hierarchy, eventually adopting the name Žalgiris in 1962. The 1980s marked a golden era, highlighted by a third-place finish in the 1987 Soviet Top League and the development of legendary players like Arminas Narbekovas. When Lithuania declared independence in 1990, the club withdrew from the Soviet system, forcing a period of rapid transition. Despite losing key talent, Žalgiris quickly asserted dominance in the newly formed A Lyga, securing multiple titles and establishing a fierce, loyal fanbase known as Pietų IV, which formed in 1985.

The early 2000s brought severe instability. Financial mismanagement and the arrest of the club's owner in 2008 led to a catastrophic collapse, forcing the original entity to fold. However, supporters refused to let the legacy die, establishing a phoenix club, VMFD Žalgiris. Starting in the second division, the new iteration rapidly climbed back to the top flight. By 2013, they had reclaimed the league title, ending a fourteen-year drought and beginning a period of sustained success that saw them win numerous domestic doubles.

Modern Žalgiris has redefined the ceiling for Lithuanian football. In 2022, the club achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first team from the country to qualify for the group stage of a UEFA competition, specifically the Europa Conference League. This feat followed a significant victory over Malmö in Champions League qualifying. Today, the club operates from the LFF Stadium, having moved from their historic, larger home ground in 2011. With ten league championships and fourteen cup victories, Žalgiris remains the standard-bearer for the sport in Vilnius, consistently balancing the weight of its complex history with the demands of contemporary European competition.
