The heavy metal band that spent years pretending to be stranded in Japan
In short: Fozzy isn't just a heavy metal act; they are a masterclass in long-form performance art. For years, the band maintained a satirical backstory claiming they were stranded in Japan for two decades after a record deal collapsed, all while navigating a complex, multi-layered persona for their frontman.
Formed in 1999 by Rich Ward and Frank Fontsere, Fozzy began as 'Fozzy Osbourne,' a cover band assembled from musicians found on a weekly basis. The group's identity was defined by a sophisticated 'gimmick': they claimed to have signed with a record company to become rock stars in Japan, only for the company to go out of business. This left them 'stranded' for 20 years, with the narrative that their demos had been stolen and recorded by other bands.
The band's most intricate layer involved frontman Chris Jericho. In 2000, Jericho joined the group under the persona of Moongoose McQueen. To maintain the bit, Jericho refused to acknowledge that he and McQueen were the same person; during interviews, he stayed in character, feigning ignorance of Chris Jericho's existence while Jericho simultaneously played the role of a 'huge fan' of the band. This meta-narrative persisted until 2003, when the band dropped the backstory in the mockumentary 'Unleashed, Uncensored, Unknown.'
The transition from covers to original material marked a turning point in their commercial trajectory. While their first two albums, 'Fozzy' and 'Happenstance,' were primarily cover records, 2005's 'All That Remains' featured entirely original tracks and sold over 100,000 copies. This shift eventually led to their first Billboard 200 entry with 'Sin and Bones' in 2015, peaking at number 143, and their highest-charting album, 'Do You Wanna Start a War,' which debuted at number 54 on the Billboard 200 in 2014.
The band's history is also defined by a revolving door of bassists, including Sean Delson, Paul Di Leo, Jeff Rouse, and Randy Drake. Despite these lineup shifts, the core creative partnership between Ward and Jericho has sustained the band through various international tours and high-profile collaborations with artists like Zakk Wylde and M. Shadows.
