How a first-round draft pick navigated injury and international play to reach All-Star status
In short: From a 2014 first-round selection to a Major League debut on his 25th birthday, Foster Griffin's career has been a journey of resilience. After battling through Tommy John surgery and a stint in Japan, he has successfully navigated the complex landscape of professional baseball to reach the game's highest honors.
Griffin's career started in 2014 after being picked by the Kansas City Royals during the first round of the MLB draft. After signing on June 10, he began a steady climb through the minor leagues, including stints with the Burlington Royals, Lexington Legends, and the Omaha Storm Chasers. By 2019, his performance earned him a spot on the Royals' 40-man roster, setting the stage for his Major League debut on July 27, 2020—coinciding exactly with his 25th birthday.
The path to the majors was not without significant setbacks. Shortly after his debut, Griffin underwent Tommy John surgery on August 11, 2020. This injury necessitated a grueling recovery process, including 15 rehabilitation appearances across five different minor league affiliates in 2021. After a brief return to the Royals in 2022, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in July 2022, where he pitched only once before moving to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.
Griffin found a new rhythm in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), signing with the Yomiuri Giants on January 12, 2023. His tenure in Japan was marked by a historic feat: on May 13, he became the first non-Japanese pitcher for Yomiuri to hit a triple since Toru Nishida in 1952. His success in Japan, including an NPB All-Star selection in 2025, eventually paved the way for his return to MLB. After signing a $5.5 million contract with the Washington Nationals in late 2025, he was named an MLB All-Star in 2026, ultimately joining the Cleveland Guardians following a trade in August of that year.
