From roofing work to the Premier League: The resilience of Frank Onyeka
In short: Before he became a versatile midfielder in England's top flight, Frank Onyeka was balancing manual labor with his football dreams. His journey from Benin City to the global stage is a masterclass in developing a resilient mindset against the odds.
Onyeka’s path to professional sports was not an easy transition. Born in 1998 in Benin City, Nigeria, he faced early skepticism from his mother, who urged him to prioritize education over football due to the slim prospects of a professional career. This pressure shaped a narrative of perseverance that would define his later development. While playing for local club Faith Motors Academy at age 15, he was discovered by Churchill Oliseh, a scout renowned for identifying international talent like Obafemi Martins.
The transition from amateur play to a structured academy required significant personal sacrifice. Onyeka moved over 250 kilometers away from his home to join Ebedei in Sagamu. During this period, he supported his family by performing roofing work while simultaneously adjusting to life away from home for the first time. He later identified this specific era of balancing manual labor and athletic training as instrumental in building the mental toughness required for elite sports.
His professional breakthrough came in January 2016 when he moved to Denmark to join Midtjylland. He quickly established himself, making his first-team debut in the Danish Cup in September 2017 and scoring in both his cup appearance and his subsequent Superliga debut against Horsens in February 2018. His versatility was noted early on by head coach Jess Thorup, who praised Onyeka's maturity as he transitioned from a winger to various roles across the pitch.
Onyeka eventually reached the Premier League in July 2021 with Brentford, where he played a role in their first-ever league win against Arsenal. After navigating injuries and substitute appearances, he secured a long-term contract in August 2023. His career continued through various moves, including a loan to FC Augsburg and a permanent move to Coventry City in June 2026. On the international stage, he became a fixture for Nigeria, starting all seven matches during their 2023 African Cup of Nations run.
