From road sweeper to celebrity striker, the turbulent career of Frank McAvennie
In short: Frank McAvennie rose from humble beginnings as a road sweeper to become a star striker for West Ham and Celtic. His career was defined by prolific goalscoring, a high-profile celebrity lifestyle, and a series of dramatic injuries and legal battles that mirrored the intensity of his time on the pitch.
Born in Glasgow in 1959, Frank McAvennie’s path to professional football was unconventional. Initially rejected by Partick Thistle and the British Army, he worked as a road sweeper before joining St Mirren in 1980. His breakthrough came at West Ham United, where he signed in 1985 for £340,000. Partnering with Tony Cottee, McAvennie scored 26 league goals in his debut season, helping the Hammers achieve their highest-ever third-place finish in English football.
McAvennie’s success brought fame, which he famously attributed to his status as a footballer rather than his looks. However, his career was marked by volatility. A move to Celtic in 1987 for a record £750,000 fee saw him win a league and cup double, but his return to West Ham in 1989 for £1.25 million was marred by a severe leg injury sustained in a challenge by Chris Kamara. This period of inactivity led to personal struggles, including a battle with cocaine addiction.
Beyond the pitch, McAvennie’s life remained headline-worthy. He faced court appearances, including a 1987 charge related to an Old Firm fracas, and later, in 2009, received a suspended sentence for affray. By 2000, he faced financial ruin, forcing him to sell his medals to businessman Willie Haughey, though they were returned in 2017. Despite the controversies and physical setbacks, McAvennie’s legacy remains that of a charismatic, if complicated, figure in Scottish and English football history.
