The resilience of a coach who rebuilt from cancer and loss
In short: After being fired from West Virginia University following a cancer diagnosis, Frank Cignetti Sr. didn't just return to the sidelines—he built one of the most dominant dynasties in college football history. His journey from rebuilding a depleted program to becoming a Hall of Fame legend is a masterclass in persistence.
Frank Cignetti Sr.'s coaching career was defined by dramatic shifts in fortune. After serving as an assistant for programs like Pittsburgh and Princeton, he took the helm at West Virginia University in 1976. He inherited a program that had won the 1975 Peach Bowl but was depleted of its core players. His tenure there was difficult; he posted a 17–27 record before being diagnosed with lymphomatoid granulomatosis, a form of cancer, in 1979. Despite undergoing a splenectomy and spending 35 days in the hospital, Cignetti recovered but was fired by West Virginia in November of that same year.
His second act at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) became his crowning achievement. Starting as the director of athletics in 1982 before becoming head coach in 1986, Cignetti transformed the program into a powerhouse. Over 20 seasons, he compiled an astounding 182–50–1 record (.783 winning percentage) at IUP, ensuring the team never suffered a losing season. Winning 14 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division titles and securing 10 Lambert Cups for being the top eastern United States Division II side, his supremacy was evident through many awards.
Cignetti's legacy is cemented by his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2013. His influence also extended to his family; his son, Frank Jr., became a prominent NFL coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, while his other son, Curt, led Indiana University to its first National Championship in 2026. Cignetti retired as the third-winningest active coach in Division II at the time of his departure.
The story of Cignetti highlights the distinction between immediate success and long-term legacy. While his WVU years were marked by health crises and a rebuilding phase, his tenure at IUP serves as a model for sustained excellence through meticulous program building.
