How a massive financial collapse inspired a revenge-driven manga saga
In short: When the 2008 Lehman Brothers bankruptcy sent shockwaves through global markets, it didn't just destroy banks. In the manga FX Fighter Kurumi-chan, it destroyed a family, driving a young student to enter the high-stakes world of margin trading to reclaim a lost fortune.
The narrative of FX Fighter Kurumi-can, created by Demunyan and illustrated by Daisuki Tansan, is rooted in the devastating real-world consequences of the 'Lehman Shock.' The story follows Kurumi Fukuga, a 20-year-old university student driven by a singular, desperate mission. Her mother, Kozue, had become addicted to foreign exchange (FX) margin trading. Lacking mathematical proficiency and facing the fallout of the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy, Kozue secretly lost ¥20 million of the family's money. Unable to face her husband, Ikuo, or the financial ruin, Kozue ended her life by jumping from a building.
Spurred by this tragedy, Kurumi spends her academic years attempting to earn back the exact ¥20 million lost by her mother. While she initially finds success in the volatile markets, the series explores the psychological and financial toll of the industry. Her journey is complicated by the influence of a brilliant but socially isolated classmate, an academic prodigy who encourages Kurumi's trading activities. Even after her father discovers her activities and she briefly quits, the pull of the market proves too strong, leading her back into the fray.
The series has evolved from a personal web comic, first posted on October 18, 2016, to a serialized professional work in Media Factory's Monthly Comic Flapper magazine, which began in February 2021. The franchise expanded further with an anime adaptation produced by Passione, which premiered on October 1, 2026. Through its characters, the story examines the thin line between financial recovery and the destructive cycle of addiction and bad trades.
