In short: Before becoming a versatile NBA veteran, Georges Niang had to undergo a drastic physical transformation. After a broken foot threatened his momentum, the Iowa State standout realized that his path to professional success required more than just talent; it required a complete overhaul of his physical composition.

Georges Niang’s journey through elite basketball is defined by resilience and physical adaptation. During his freshman year at Iowa State in 2013, he earned a spot on the Big 12 All-Rookie Team, but his momentum was halted in the 2014 NCAA tournament when he broke his fifth metatarsal in his right foot. This injury forced him to miss the remainder of that tournament, a setback that underscored the physical demands of high-level collegiate play.

The following offseason, Niang made a strategic decision to alter his physique to better suit the rigors of the game. By cutting back on his calorie consumption, he successfully slimmed down from 260 pounds (120 kg) to 230 pounds (100 kg). This weight loss proved vital for his performance; as a junior, he led the Cyclones in scoring with 15.3 points per game and helped the team reach the 2015 NCAA tournament.

Niang’s collegiate legacy is marked by several program records. He was the first player in Iowa State history to reach four consecutive NCAA tournaments and the first two-time All-American for the program. By the end of his tenure, he held the school records for most games played (138) and most wins (98). This foundation allowed him to enter the NBA, where he has since played for the Indiana Pacers, Utah Jazz, Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Golden State Warriors.

His career has been characterized by movement and adaptability, moving through various contracts and trades. From being selected 50th overall by the Indiana Pacers in 2016 to signing a two-year, $6.7 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2021, Niang has become a seasoned professional known for his ability to provide veteran presence and scoring, such as his 33-point outburst against the Milwaukee Bucks in early 2024.
