From a chemistry professor's experiment to a modern football dynasty
In short: In 1892, a chemistry professor organized a single game against Mercer. Today, the Georgia Bulldogs are a powerhouse with over 900 wins, a legendary lineage of white bulldog mascots, and a recent era of unprecedented dominance that has redefined the sport.
The Georgia Bulldogs football program began in 1892, when Dr. Charles Herty, a chemistry professor, organized the university's first team. The early years were volatile; the program nearly faced a shutdown in 1897 following the death of player Richard Von Albade Gammon, which prompted state legislation to ban football. It wasn't until 1920 that the 'Bulldog' nickname was officially adopted, following suggestions from journalists that the name conveyed both dignity and ferocity.
The program's identity is deeply tied to its visual traditions. In 1939, coach Wally Butts introduced the 'silver britches'—silver-colored pants—which became a staple of the uniform. While coach Vince Dooley briefly switched to white pants in 1964, he reinstated the silver trousers prior to the 1980 national championship season. The modern helmet, featuring the iconic red oval 'G', was also a Dooley-era innovation, designed by Anne Donaldson in 1964.
Georgia's recent history is defined by a period of unprecedented dominance under head coach Kirby Smart, who took over in 2015. Smart led the Bulldogs to back-to-back College Football Playoff national titles in 2021 and 2022, making them the first program to repeat as playoff-era champions. This era has seen record-breaking margins of victory, including a 65–7 win over TCU and a 65–7 win over TCU and a 63–3 victory over Florida State in the 2023 Orange Bowl.
Beyond the field, the program maintains unique customs, such as the burial of deceased mascots—a lineage of white bulldogs known as Uga—in a mausoleum near Sanford Stadium. The stadium itself is famous for its 'Between the Hedges' privet hedges, which have surrounded the turf since the stadium's 1929 inaugural game.
