In short: After suspending football for World War II, Georgia Southern's program underwent a radical revival. What began as a struggle to return to the field transformed into a dominant dynasty, producing six national championships and a historic undefeated season in the 20th century.

The trajectory of Georgia Southern Eagles football is defined by dramatic shifts in status and sudden bursts of dominance. The program first began organizing teams as early as 1909, but it did not establish a continuous presence until 1924. This continuity was shattered in 1941 when play was suspended due to World War II, leaving the program dormant for 41 years until its revival in the early 1980s.

The program's ascent was fueled by high-profile coaching hires and specific tactical identities. In 1982, the school hired Erk Russell, a move described by humorist Lewis Grizzard as landing a 'franchise.' Russell's era established the foundation for the Eagles' success in the FCS (I-AA) level, including a historic 15–0 undefeated season in 1989. This success was bolstered by the implementation of the triple-option offense, a hallmark of the program's most successful years under coaches like Paul Johnson and Jeff Monken.

Georgia Southern's evolution reached a milestone in 2014 when it moved from the FCS to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), joining the Sun Belt Conference. In its inaugural FBS season, the Eagles achieved a rare feat: winning the conference championship outright and going undefeated in conference play. This transition required significant institutional investment, including a plan to raise $36.6 million over eight years to expand Paulson Stadium and accommodate the higher level of competition.

Despite these achievements, the program has faced periods of instability. Following the era of dominance, the team experienced several losing seasons and coaching transitions, including the departure of head coach Willie Fritz in 2015. However, the program continues to compete at the FBS level, recently drawing national attention with a 45–42 upset victory over Nebraska in 2022.
