In short: From leading Bordeaux to a European final to managing the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr’s career is a masterclass in the volatility of professional football. Discover how this German coach became a central figure in the continent's most prestigious national team campaigns.

Born on 28 June 1953, Gernot Rohr has built a career defined by significant continental achievements and sudden departures. He first gained major European recognition in 1996, when he guided the French club Girondins de Bordeaux to the UEFA Cup final. That impressive run included a notable 3–0 victory over AC Milan in the quarter-finals, though the campaign ultimately ended in defeat to Bayern Munich, following a 2–0 loss away and a 3–1 victory at home.

While his European exploits were notable, Rohr became deeply embedded in African football. His tenure with the Nigeria national team, which began in August 2016 under the leadership of NFF chief Amaju Pinnick, stands as a period of historic milestones. A 1–0 win against Zambia on 7 October 2017 meant Rohr's Super Eagles were the inaugural African group to reach the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The squad subsequently secured third place during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations under his management.

However, the life of a national team manager is rarely stable. Rohr’s career has been marked by frequent dismissals and resignations across various nations. He was dismissed by Étoile Sportive du Sahel in May 2009, sacked by Burkina Faso in December 2015, and eventually let go by Nigeria in December 2021, despite having secured qualification for the 2021 Africa Nations Cup and reaching the final qualifying round for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He currently serves as the manager of the Benin national team.
