Forget the motorcycle: this Ghost Rider drives a 1969 Dodge Charger
In short: While the classic Ghost Rider is defined by a flaming skull and a motorcycle, Robbie Reyes brings a heavy-metal twist to the mantle. Swapping two wheels for a muscle car, this version of the antihero uses a supernatural vehicle to navigate the streets of Los Angeles and the multiverse.
Introduced in March 2014 by writer Felipe Smith and artist Tradd Moore, Robbie Reyes represents a significant departure from predecessors like Johnny Blaze or Danny Ketch. Unlike the traditional image of a floating human skull, Reyes's transformation is designed to mimic the aesthetic of a classic muscle car. He is an amalgam of a human being and a flaming vehicle, often appearing with a helmet-like head rather than a bare skull.
The character's origin is rooted in tragedy and family secrets. A high-school student and mechanic in Los Angeles, Reyes was attempting to win a street race to support his developmentally disabled brother, Gabe. During the race, he was shot by mercenaries, an event that led to his revival as a demonic entity. Crucially, his power does not stem from a traditional Spirit of Vengeance, but from the spirit of Eli Morrow, his estranged uncle. Eli was a Satanic serial killer who murdered at least 37 people before being killed by police in 1999.
Reyes operates the 'Hell Charger,' a 1969 Dodge Charger R/T that serves as more than just transport. The car functions as a warp hub for teleportation, a portal to Hell via its trunk, and even a tool to contact the deceased. Despite the dark nature of his connection to Eli, Reyes uses his superhuman strength and the 'Penance Stare'—an ability to force others to feel the pain they have inflicted—to fight against threats ranging from the supervillain Mr. Hyde to cosmic entities like the Celestials.
