The Dutch defender who rejected the path of least resistance
In short: In 2026, Givairo Read faced a pivotal choice: accept a call-up to the Netherlands under-21s or stay loyal to his age group. His decision to prioritize the under-19s led to an unprecedented European triumph and a legendary performance on the continental stage.
Givairo Read’s ascent through the ranks of Dutch football is marked by a series of high-stakes decisions and rapid milestones. After moving from the FC Volendam academy to Feyenoord in June 2023—a move facilitated by Robin van Persie—Read quickly transitioned from a youth prospect to a first-team mainstay. By September 2026, he had set a new benchmark for 21st-century defenders, reaching 13 assists within his initial 50 Eredivisie appearances through his exceptional defensive skill.
The defining moment of his early career arrived during the 2025 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. Despite being eligible for the under-21 squad, Read declined an invitation from coach Michael Reiziger, opting instead to join Peter van de Veen's under-19 squad. This choice proved transformative. After serving a suspension in the opening match, Read captained the Netherlands through the remainder of the tournament. His decisive cross, which forced an own goal from Spain's Raúl Jiménez, secured a 1–0 victory and the Netherlands' first-ever Under-19 European title.
Read's journey has not been without physical setbacks. Following a period of dominance in early 2025, where he earned Johan Cruyff Talent of the Month honors, injuries sidelined him for much of late 2025 and early 2026. Despite these hurdles, his impact remained undeniable; by December 2025, the CIES identified him as the best player born since 2006 not playing in a 'big-5' league. His ability to balance individual brilliance with leadership continues to define his role as a cornerstone of the Feyenoord defense.
