In short: In Gravity Rush 2, the environment is more than a backdrop. Through advanced gravity mechanics and organic character reactions, director Keiichiro Toyama aimed for total immersion, expanding the scale and life of the universe to make every movement feel uniquely impactful.

Directed by Keiichiro Toyama, Gravity Rush 2 expands significantly on its predecessor. The game features a map 2.5 times larger than the original and offers three times the number of missions, resulting in a playtime estimated between 20 and 40 hours. To enhance immersion, Toyama focused on making the world feel alive; in the city of Jirga Para Lhao, inhabitants react organically to the player, who can even engage in small talk or throw gang signs.

The core gameplay revolves around Kat's ability to manipulate gravity through three distinct styles. Players can utilize the original gravity style, or switch to Lunar or Jupiter modes using the touchpad. Lunar style increases Kat's speed and jump height, while Jupiter style makes her feel heavier to increase attack impact. This mechanical depth is paired with a destructible environment, allowing the player's gravity-shifting powers to physically affect the world.

The narrative follows Kat as she is transported from Hekseville to a new universe. Alongside her partner Raven, Kat must navigate complex political landscapes, such as the oppression of the poor by the Council in Jirga Para Lhao, and face threats like the Nevi and various androids. The story is noted for its stylized delivery and character development, with some critics comparing its aesthetic to Studio Ghibli productions.

While the game received generally favorable reviews and was nominated for several awards, including Best Original Music, its commercial performance was more modest. In Japan, the game had sold 102,630 units by February 15, 2017, leading to assumptions that it was not a major commercial success.
