From Hurricane Katrina displacement to NFL stardom: the resilient rise of Grant Delpit
In short: After being displaced from New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina, Grant Delpit rose through the ranks of high school football to become one of the most decorated defensive backs in college history. Now a cornerstone for the Cleveland Browns, his journey is a masterclass in overcoming physical and environmental adversity.
Grant Delpit's path to the NFL was marked by significant transitions. Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, his family relocated from New Orleans to Houston, Texas. His high school years saw him move from St. Thomas to Lamar High School, before a final senior-season transfer to IMG Academy in Florida. This period of movement preceded a dominant collegiate career at LSU, where he earned two consensus All-American honors and the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award in 2019.
Delpit entered the 2020 NFL Draft as a highly touted prospect, though analysts held varying opinions on his exact standing. While some experts, such as Gil Brandt, ranked him as the top safety available, others placed him as high as 15th or as low as 40th overall. Regardless of the specific projection, the Cleveland Browns selected him in the second round, 44th overall, and subsequently signed him to a four-year, $7.46 million contract in July 2020.
His professional career has been a test of endurance against injury. His rookie season was cut short when he tore his Achilles tendon during training camp in August 2020. He faced further setbacks with a hamstring injury in 2021 and a groin injury in 2023. Despite these hurdles, Delpit has remained a vital defensive presence, earning a massive three-year, $36 million contract in December 2023, and later signing a three-year, $48 million extension in July 2026.
