How a song about a jazz singer became Ohio's official rock anthem
In short: In 1965, a New York band recruited a 17-year-old singer to record a track that would dominate the charts. What began as a rhythmic tune about a "hard luck girl" eventually evolved into a massive cultural staple for universities and major league baseball teams across America.
The origins of "Hang On Sloopy" are tied to Dorothy Sloop, a jazz singer and student at Ohio University in Athens. Originally titled "My Girl Sloopy," the song was first recorded in 1964 by the rhythm and blues group The Vibrations. While it reached No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100, it was the version by The McCoys that achieved massive success, hitting number one in the U.S. in October 1965.
The path to the top of the charts involved a complex series of musical hand-offs. The Strangeloves, a New York City band, began performing the song after their hit "I Want Candy." They eventually recruited a young Rick Zehringer—who later became known as Rick Derringer—to record the vocals for a group they renamed The McCoys to avoid confusion with Paul Revere & the Raiders. This version became a global phenomenon, with covers reaching the charts in Spanish, Portuguese, and the UK.
Beyond the music charts, the song secured a permanent place in Ohio's cultural identity. It gained massive popularity after the Ohio State University Marching Band began playing it during football games on October 9, 1965, following an arrangement by staff arranger John Tatgenhorst. This association grew so strong that in 1985, the 116th Ohio General Assembly officially designated the track as the state's rock song via House Concurrent Resolution 16.
Today, the song remains a signature anthem for several major sports entities. It is played during the middle of the 8th inning for the Cleveland Guardians and at the end of the 3rd quarter for both the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
