The enduring legacy of Israel's top-tier football competition
In short: While modern leagues fluctuate, the Israeli Premier League is approaching a historic milestone. As the 2026–27 season approaches, we look at the structural shifts and the long-standing traditions that define the 85th year of top-flight Israeli football.
The 2026–27 season marks a significant moment in the timeline of Israeli football. Known for sponsorship reasons as Ligat TOTO Winner, this upcoming campaign represents the 28th season since the formal introduction of the Israeli Premier League in 1999. However, the lineage of top-tier football in the country stretches much further back, as this will be the 85th season of elite competition in Israel.
The composition of the league for the 2026–27 season reflects the constant movement of promotion and relegation that defines the sport. The league will feature fourteen teams in total. Twelve of these sides are returning from the previous campaign, while two teams join the top flight following their promotion from the 2025–26 Liga Leumit. These promoted clubs are Maccabi Petah Tikva and Hapoel Ramat Gan Givatayim.
The return of these two clubs highlights different trajectories of success. Maccabi Petah Tikva enters the season after spending only a single season away from the top tier. In contrast, Hapoel Ramat Gan Givatayim makes a much more significant comeback, returning to the Premier League after a 13-year absence. They take the place of Maccabi Bnei Reineh and F.C. Ashdod, both of whom were relegated to the 2026–27 Liga Leumit.
Beyond the roster of clubs, the league operates under specific regulatory constraints regarding international talent. For this season, the number of foreign players permitted to compete is restricted to eight per team, a rule that shapes the composition and scouting strategies of the participating clubs.
