The enduring dominance of Israel's oldest football club
In short: Founded in 1906, Maccabi Tel Aviv has become the most successful club in Israeli history. From a historic strike in 1937 to a golden age in the 1950s, discover how this club built a legacy of unmatched domestic titles and international triumph.
Maccabi Tel Aviv, established in 1906 as the HaRishon Le Zion-Yafo Association, holds the distinction of being Israel's oldest football club. After the founding of Tel Aviv in 1909, the club adopted its current name. The club's identity is deeply rooted in its name, which refers to the Maccabees, and its logo features the Star of David to represent the Jewish people.
The club's history is marked by significant milestones and periods of intense success. In the early 1920s, they were recognized as the strongest team in Palestine. Following a player strike in 1937, the club secured its first league title. The 1950s are considered a 'Golden Age,' during which the club won five championships and four Israel Football Association Cups, including a historic double in the 1953–54 season.
Maccabi's dominance is reflected in its trophy cabinet, boasting 26 League Championships and 24 State Cups. They are the only Israeli team to achieve a domestic treble and the only club never to have been relegated from the Israeli Premier League. Beyond domestic borders, they won two Asian Champion Club Tournaments before Israel's expulsion from the AFC in 1974.
The club also maintains a strong focus on the future through its youth programme. It operates three football academies in the Tel Aviv area, supporting over 750 children aged 6–15, and manages 17 youth teams comprising approximately 400 players between the ages of 9 and 19.
