The only goalie to win 30 games in every first four seasons
In short: Before he was a Broadway folk hero, Henrik Lundqvist was an underdog whose path to stardom was nearly derailed by early mistakes. From freezing sandpits in Sweden to becoming the highest-paid goaltender in the NHL, his journey is a masterclass in persistence and technical evolution.
Lundqvist's path to the NHL was not an immediate success story. After debuting for Frölunda HC in 2000, he struggled significantly, losing his roster spot to an American veteran after only ten appearances. A pivotal moment occurred during Moscow's 2001 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, which rescued his fading career. Coaches questioned his motivation, but he responded by leading the Swedish national junior team to a fourth-place finish and subsequently leading Frölunda to two consecutive Anton Cup titles.
Upon arriving in New York in 2005, Lundqvist quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Just days after his NHL debut, he earned the nickname "King Henrik" from columnist Larry Brooks following a dominant performance against the Atlanta Thrashers. He broke multiple records as a rookie, including becoming the first Rangers goaltender to record a shutout since 1985 and surpassing the win totals of legends like Jim Henry and Johnny Bower.
Technically, Lundqvist is known for an aggressive "butterfly style" characterized by his athleticism and upright torso stance. Only one NHL netminder has achieved eleven 30-win campaigns throughout a twelve-year span, marking an unprecedented level of regularity. By 2008, he became the highest-paid goalie in the league, averaging $6.875 million per season, while simultaneously breaking records for shutouts and becoming the first Rangers player to win the team's MVP award five consecutive times.
His legacy is further cemented by unique family milestones: on December 14, 2006, he became the first NHL goaltender to face his identical twin brother, Joel. This made them only the third set of twins in history to play against one another in an NHL game.
