From Manchester United's youth system to NRL stardom and England's international stage
In short: Before becoming a standout centre in the NRL, Herbie Farnworth was a promising soccer prospect in the Manchester United development system. Today, the English international has transformed from a Brisbane Broncos rookie into a dominant force for the Dolphins, earning elite accolades and a place among the game's best.
Born in Blacko, Lancashire, on 23 December 1999, Herbie Farnworth's athletic journey began with a focus on association football. While he was part of the Manchester United development system as a youth, he eventually transitioned to rugby league, having also grown up playing rugby union. His move to Australia was prompted by scouts from the Brisbane Broncos spotting his talent while he was playing for Wigan St Patricks and Newton Storm during his time at Ermysted's Grammar School.
Farnworth's professional ascent was marked by rapid progression through the Brisbane Broncos system. After playing in the NRL Under-20s in 2017, he spent 2018 on loan with Norths Devils, where he became the team's top scorer. His first NRL match occurred during Round 16 of 2019, facing the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. His impact was immediate; by 2020, he was named the Brisbane Broncos Rookie of the Year, even as the club finished last on the table.
His scoring prowess continued through 2021, when he won the Allan Langer Award as Brisbane's Best Back. After a prolific 2023 season that included a Grand Final appearance, Farnworth signed with the Dolphins for the 2024 season. Since joining the Dolphins, he has maintained elite form, earning consecutive Dally M Team of the Year selections in 2023 and 2024, and was shortlisted for the Golden Boot award in 2024. His international career with England also includes significant milestones, such as a Man of the Match performance against Samoa in November 2024.
