In short: In the complex landscape of global Christianity, Henry Luke Orombi emerged as a pivotal figure for traditionalist Anglicans. By navigating high-stakes theological disputes and structural shifts, he helped define how the Church of Uganda asserts its influence on international religious policy and local social issues.

Between 2004 and his December 2012 retirement, Henry Luke Orombi held the positions of Bishop of Kampala and Archbishop of Uganda. His leadership was defined by an evangelical preaching style and a focus on church growth, clergy training, and social outreach. Before reaching the archbishopric, he held various roles including Diocesan Youth Officer and Archdeacon, eventually serving as the Bishop of Nebbi Diocese from 1993 to 2003, where he championed education and health services.

Orombi became a prominent voice for the Global South within the Anglican Communion. A notable example of his influence occurred in 2009 when he oversaw the transfer of all American clergy and congregations under the Church of Uganda to the Anglican Church in North America. By managing international church supervision, he reacted to pushback regarding policies established by Episcopal Church leadership.

His theological stance is characterized by a commitment to traditionalist values. In 2009, he argued that existing GAFCON structures already met the pastoral needs of traditionalists, responding to Vatican proposals for personal ordinariates. Domestically, Orombi navigated sensitive legislation; while the Church of Uganda opposed an Anti-Homosexuality Bill due to the death penalty, they supported a version mandating life imprisonment. He also positioned the church as a place for counseling and healing regarding sexual orientation.

Orombi retired two years earlier than expected in 2012 but remained active in mentoring clergy and supporting reconciliation initiatives. His legacy is tied to his ability to balance local development with global ecclesiastical politics, ensuring that Ugandan Anglicanism remains a significant weight in international religious discourse.
