In short: Founded in 1903 and named after the son of Zeus, Heracles Almelo has navigated a century of highs and lows. From winning national titles in the early twentieth century to modern data-driven recruitment, this Dutch club's history is a testament to survival and evolution in professional football.

The club's identity is rooted in antiquity, having been founded on 3 May 1903 as Heracles, inspired by the Greek demigod. Over the decades, the club's name underwent several iterations, becoming SC Heracles '74 on 1 July 1974, before finally settling on its current name in 1998.

Heracles has experienced significant fluctuations in competitive standing. The club secured two Dutch national titles, in 1927 and 1941. After a long absence from the top flight, they earned promotion to the Eredivisie in 2004–05, remaining there for 17 seasons until their relegation at the end of the 2021–22 season. After defeating Jong PSV 3–0 and beating Jong Ajax on 19 May 2023, they secured the 2022–23 Eerste Divisie title, ensuring instant promotion back to the Eredivisie.

The club's modern era is defined by both historic milestones and technological shifts. In the 2015–16 season, Heracles finished sixth in the Eredivisie, qualifying for European football for the first time via the UEFA Europa League. Today, the club utilizes advanced analytics through a partnership with Jamestown Analytics, which helped identify five summer signings, including Mario Borac and Max Hauswirth, to bolster their scouting operations.

Home matches are held at the Asito Stadion in Almelo. Since its construction in 1999, the venue has seen significant growth, expanding from an initial capacity of 6,900 to 8,500 in 2005, and eventually reaching its current capacity of 13,500 following renovations at the start of the 2015–16 season.
