In short: In the 2026 Tamil romantic comedy Hi, a desperate lie becomes the only way to prevent an arranged marriage. As Mayil and Devayani navigate deception and family pressure, they discover that the truth might be more complicated than the fiction they created.

Directed by Vishnu Edavan in his directorial debut, Hi is a wholesome family entertainer that eschews conventional antagonists for a low-stakes, feel-good narrative. The plot follows Mayil, a man who flees to Chennai to avoid an arranged marriage after a rejected proposal, and Devayani, who escapes an abusive marriage in a village. When their paths cross in the city, Mayil finds himself caught in a web of his own making. The film features a notable cast including Kavin and Nayanthara in lead roles, supported by veterans like Radikaa Sarathkumar and Prabhu. Edavan, a former lyricist, previously contributed to films such as Kaithi and Vikram as an assistant director.

To prevent Devayani from moving to London with her employer and to stop their families from forcing them into arranged marriages, Mayil concocts a massive deception: he claims Devayani is pregnant with his child. He further complicates the lie by telling her he is waiting for a Pakistani lover to return. This fabrication briefly succeeds, even prompting Devayani's father to quit drinking for the sake of the 'unborn child,' but the scheme eventually unravels through a series of confessions and overheard secrets. The deception even leads to Mayil's maternal uncle, Yogendran, being temporarily imprisoned after discovering the truth. This chaos eventually forces Mayil to abandon his lies and face his family's disapproval.

While some critics, such as Latha Srinivasan of NDTV, argued the film's premise relies on dated tropes, others praised its emotional resonance. Bhuvanesh Chandar of The Hindu noted the film's ability to bring back a 'comforting strain' of Tamil cinema through its soulful songs and warm frames. Ultimately, the film explores themes of abandonment and the courage required to move past fear, as Devayani eventually reconciles her childhood trauma with her rediscovered love for Mayil. The soundtrack, composed by Jen Martin, includes hits like 'Kannakuzhiya,' which garnered three million digital views. The film's release was eventually moved from an initial April date to late August 2026.
