How railway workers founded a football league that still shapes Scottish football
In short: In 1893, employees of the Highland Railway Company met at a local club to launch a football league. Today, this historic competition sits at level 5 of the Scottish football pyramid, providing a vital gateway for northern clubs to climb toward the professional leagues.
Founded on 4 August 1893 at the Inverness Workman's Club, the Highland Football League began with seven original teams, including Inverness Thistle and Caledonian. The league's origins are deeply tied to the local industry; the founding members were employees of the Highland Railway Company, specifically from the Locomotive and Carriage & Wagon Workshops at Loch Gorm Works, which employed approximately 700 staff.
While the league was once one of several senior leagues in Scotland, its role has evolved significantly. Since the 2014–15 season, it has functioned as a key part of the Scottish football pyramid. The champions now enter a promotion play-off against the Lowland Football League winners, with the ultimate victor facing the bottom club in Scottish League Two for a spot in the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL).
This integration has brought both opportunity and logistical challenges. While clubs like Cove Rangers successfully achieved promotion to the SPFL in 2019, the system has introduced new pressures. Smaller clubs face potential financial burdens from required ground upgrades, and geographically remote teams like Wick Academy must manage the intense travel logistics required to compete in a national pyramid structure.
The league's membership has seen significant shifts over the decades. In 1994, major clubs like Ross County and Inverness Thistle departed for the SFL, eventually merging to form the modern Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Today, the league consists of 18 member clubs playing a 34-match season, maintaining a legacy that began over 130 years ago.
