In short: In 1974, restaurateur Warner LeRoy opened a massive entertainment complex in Ocean County, New Jersey. Designed to blend into the natural landscape, the park featured record-breaking attractions and ambitious concepts that evolved over decades. Today, it stands as the second-largest theme park globally, following a major 2012 expansion.

Warner LeRoy originally envisioned a sprawling seven-park destination that would integrate seamlessly with the local lakes and woodlands. His 1972 proposal included diverse attractions like a safari park, a floral garden, and a shopping district, all connected by an elaborate transit network of boats, buses, and monorails. When the complex debuted on July 1, 1974, it cost approximately $10 million to build, with the Enchanted Forest and Safari Park serving as the primary operational areas.

The park's early identity was defined by oversized attractions, including the world's largest spraying fountain and the tallest Ferris wheel of the era. However, the site faced significant challenges, including a tragic 1984 fire at the Haunted Castle that led to new national safety regulations for dark rides. Attendance fluctuations and shifting ownership—from the original developers to Six Flags and later Time Warner—forced the park to constantly reinvent itself through ride rotations and new thematic zones.

The modern era of the park began with a major consolidation in 2012, when the 160-acre amusement park merged with the 350-acre Wild Safari to create a 510-acre resort. This move solidified its status as the world's second-largest theme park. Throughout its history, the venue has served as a testing ground for extreme engineering, from the record-breaking Kingda Ka roller coaster to the 242-foot-tall SkyScreamer, ensuring it remains a landmark of American amusement culture.
