The Houston football franchise that never actually played in Houston
In short: For much of its existence, the Houston Gamblers was a team without a home. Despite its name, the franchise spent its early years as a traveling squad, bouncing between Alabama and Tennessee, before a chaotic series of mergers and rebrands led to its eventual collapse.
The Houston Gamblers' early history is a study in the instability of modern spring football. When the USFL announced the franchise on November 22, 2021, the team was positioned as the only USFL club based west of the Mississippi River. However, under the league's 'hub model,' the team never actually played in Houston during its 2022 and 2023 seasons. Instead, they functioned as guests in Birmingham, Alabama, and Memphis, Tennessee, sharing venues with other franchises like the Memphis Showboats.
The franchise's identity underwent a dizzying transformation following the 2024 merger between the USFL and the XFL to form the UFL. On January 1, 2024, the Gamblers merged with their XFL counterpart, the Houston Roughnecks. While the team briefly adopted the Roughnecks' branding and played at Rice Stadium and TDECU Stadium, the league eventually decided to revert to the 'iconic' Gamblers name for the 2026 season. This rebranding included a move to Shell Energy Stadium and the introduction of a new mascot, Ace the Armadillo.
Despite the attempt to reclaim its roots, the franchise's frequent relocations and stadium changes proved fatal. League co-owner Mike Repole noted that the instability caused by the merger and the constant shifting of venues had damaged the relationship with Houston beyond repair. The UFL declared the Gamblers' dissolution would occur after the 2026 campaign. On September 30, 2026, the team's head coach, Kevin Sumlin, and the remaining roster were reassigned to the Dallas Renegades, marking the end of a turbulent era.
