A nation born from failed compromises and mass migration

How Pakistan Was Born | Complete Story of 1947 Independence | Historical Documentary · 44:52 · Video: from start to now · Watch at the source

In short: The birth of Pakistan in 1947 was not a simple transition to independence. It was the culmination of decades of political friction, intense communal violence, and a geographic puzzle that left a new country with two wings separated by over 1,000 miles of sovereign territory.

The path to Pakistan was paved by a long campaign for self-government that intensified after World War II. While the British government aimed to leave behind a united India, negotiations between the Hindu Indian National Congress and the Muslim League repeatedly collapsed. In 1946, Muhammad Ali Jinnah called for 'direct action' to establish a Muslim state, triggering a wave of inter-communal violence across cities like Calcutta, Bombay, and Delhi that left the country in a state of 'blood lust.'

On June 2, 1947, Lord Mountbatten announced the partition into India and Pakistan. This division was complicated by the fact that Pakistan's two wings—the northwestern territories and the eastern region of Bengal—were separated by roughly 1,000 miles (1,600 km) of Indian territory with no simple communication routes. Furthermore, while the more developed provinces of Punjab and Bengal were divided, Pakistan received primarily rural hinterlands, leaving it with fewer resources than its neighbor.

The transition was marked by a distinct political choice: unlike India, which accepted Mountbatten as its chief executive, the Muslim League rejected him to be Pakistan's head of state. They instead chose Muhammad Ali Jinnah, known as Quaid-e-Azam, as their first governor-general, with Liaquat Ali Khan as prime minister. This period was defined by a massive migration and heavy reliance on the Indian Army to maintain order as British troops withdrew from their barracks.
