The program builder who turned struggling football teams into national champions
In short: Howard Schnellenberger was a master of the turnaround. From the brink of being dropped by the University of Miami to revitalizing Louisville and building Florida Atlantic from scratch, he used aggressive passing attacks and bold recruiting strategies to transform struggling programs into championship contenders.
Schnellenberger’s coaching philosophy was defined by a refusal to accept mediocrity. When he arrived at the University of Miami in 1979, the program was so unstable it had nearly been dropped by the university. He implemented a pro-style, pass-oriented playbook—a departure from the standard college offenses of the era—and utilized a rigorous 'boot camp' methodology learned from mentors Bear Bryant and Don Shula. This approach led Miami to its first national championship in 1983 after defeating Nebraska in the Orange Bowl.
His success was also rooted in a revolutionary recruiting strategy. He established a metaphorical 'fence around South Florida,' focusing on the 'State of Miami' to secure the best talent from the three-county area before looking nationally. This model changed how college programs approached regional recruiting. He applied similar intensity to the University of Louisville in 1985, a program that had not seen a winning season since 1978 and was facing potential relegation to Division I-AA. He famously predicted the program was on a 'collision course with the national championship,' a claim he partially fulfilled by leading them to a 34–7 victory over Alabama in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl.
However, his bluntness was a double-edged sword. During a single season at Oklahoma in 1994, his criticism of the players' motivation led to an unexpected resignation. He also faced a quick dismissal from the Baltimore Colts in 1974 following a sarcastic remark to owner Robert Irsay. Despite these volatility-prone moments, his legacy as a 'program builder' remains, evidenced by his ability to raise $13 million in pledges to launch the Florida Atlantic University football program in 1998.
